The Swaziland Experience: Building the foundation for national sustainable systems

Swaziland Experience ImageSCMS supported the Ministry of Health in improving Swaziland’s overall health care waste management (HCWM) system by building infrastructure and controls to support the ministry’s national objectives. The process provided capacity building while empowering health care providers and auxiliary staff to make sound HCWM decisions.

SCMS collaborated extensively with the Ministry of Health and other relevant partners to develop national guidelines; national implementation strategy; key subject standard operating procedures; a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system; national laboratory waste management guidelines and complementary information, educational and communication materials.

Experience Swaziland ImageCapital improvements efforts included the installation of four incinerators and upgrading two other incinerators. These infrastructure and control enhancements formed the foundation for the development of a comprehensive training program and associated interventions that will be funded by the World Bank as part of their national implementation strategy going forward.
